How the estimate works
The estimator reserves 2GB of RAM for the hypervisor, then takes the lower of two limits: RAM divided by your per-VM allocation, and total threads with a 3:1 vCPU overcommit divided by vCPUs per VM. RAM is the binding constraint on most mini PCs — which is why our guides push 32GB as the serious-homelab floor and flag soldered-RAM models clearly.
LXC containers share the host kernel and typically need a fraction of a VM's memory, so the same box runs far more of them. Mixed workloads land between the two numbers.
